![]() ![]() I identify questions along these axes of interpretation that are relevant to ask in regard to imagery, timing, framing, expressive anatomy, and writing, which I apply to three popular works. ![]() Relating the method to the formal elements of sequential art as theorized by Will Eisner, I focus on three relevant aspects of comics production and representation: autobiography, intersubjectivity, and history and popular culture. ![]() Ricoeur’s method synthesizes phenomenological description and hermeneutic interpretation, such that it has implications not only for understanding the meaning of the world but, ipso facto, the meaning of one’s life in one’s cultural and historical contexts. In this study, I outline a way of reading modern comics through Paul Riceour’s hermeneutical phenomenology. ![]()
